CTIA 2011: Aeroflex Supports NTT DOCOMO's Successful Launch of Xi™ LTE Network

Aeroflex Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aeroflex Holding Corp. announced today that it has worked closely with NTT DOCOMO, INC. to support the successful testing, rollout, and launch of their Xi LTE 

network.

Aeroflex provided a suite of test tools to support the development for one of the first LTE networks in the world. The DOCOMO Xi LTE network went live in Japan during December 2010. As a result of testing prior to the launch, Aeroflex and DOCOMO have successfully proven many key LTE features including 2x2 MIMO operation, mobility, and Cat 4 (150Mbps) data rates.

CTIA 2011: Nokia ‘Astounds’ US with new Symbian device. Launch April 6. $79.99. T-mobile.

Nokia last night confirmed reports it is to launch a new Symbian device in the US via an exclusive deal with T-Mobile, a move designed to strengthen its limited presence in the North American market and build on its recent promise to ship 150 million more Symbian devices.

 Dubbed the Nokia Astound, the new device appears to be a tweaked C7, featuring the same 3.5-inch AMOLED display, 8 megapixel camera, and 720p HD video capture as the original announced last year.

The only obvious differences are the T-Mobile branding along the bottom chin and support for the updated Symbian^3.1, which has features including portrait QWERTY input and a refreshed browser.

 T-Mobile will be offering Wi-Fi calling as well as unrestricted video calling over Qik thanks to the front-facing camera. Nokia has called it “an affordable smartphone,” promising availability beginning 6 April for US$79.99 after a US$50 mail-in rebate on contract.

Nokia’s move comes as it recently promised to commit to “the long-tail of Symbian as long as it gives us profitable margin.” The world’s largest handset vendor has already pledged to move to Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS as its “primary smartphone platform,” but that strategy will take until 2013 to come to full fruition and in the meantime Nokia has said it intends to sell 150 million more Symbian phones during the transition phase.

 Nokia has an installed user base of around 200 million Symbian phones worldwide. The company plans to update Symbian's user interface this year. Meanwhile the launch of the Astound will aim to boost its credentials in the US market. 

UK: 4G spectrum auctions in 2012

UK regulator Ofcom announced plans to auction-off spectrum suitable for LTE early next year. It said that the 250MHz of new spectrum on offer – in the 800MHz (digital dividend) and 2.6GHz frequency bands – is equivalent to three quarters of the mobile spectrum in use in the UK today, and 80 percent more than the UK 3G auctions that took place in 2000.





 “The combination of low and high frequency spectrum available... creates the potential for next generation mobile broadband services to be widely available across the UK, while at the same time having the capacity to cope with significant demand, even in urban centres,” the regulator said in a statement. 





However, Ofcom faces problems due to the uneven way spectrum has been allocated in the past. For example, market-leader Everything Everywhere (formed by the merger of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK) holds no valuable spectrum under 1GHz, while rivals O2 and Vodafone are currently re-farming existing 900MHz for mobile broadband use. The UK’s 3G auctions a decade ago raised a colossal £22.5 billion for the government but the 4G frequencies are expected to raise just a fraction of that. 





Ofcom has put a number of safeguards in place to ensure that none of the UK’s four national operators use the auctions to gain an unfair competitive advantage.





 “The least restrictive way to ensure at least four national competitors is through the use of spectrum floors in the auction,” it said. “This involves disregarding any auction outcomes in which four companies do not win the minimum amount of spectrum necessary to provide higher quality data services.





 This can involve different combinations of spectrum, each of which could be sufficient to ensure a credible competitor.” These conditions are also seen as a way of ensuring the survival of 3 UK, the country’s smallest operator, which would otherwise struggle to compete with its much larger rivals in the auction process.
