Google Latitude app for iPhone users updated.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Google has added a check-in capability to the iOS-based version of its Latitude social location app, which it  offers through Apple’s App Store. The same update has already been made to the Android version of the app.

Adding check-in capability means users can not just share their location with friends but also reference specific businesses or places of interest, such as a coffee shop or bar.  The check-in feature has been available on the Android version of the app since February. Adding a check-in capability to Latitude makes it more of a competitor to popular Foursquare and Facebook's Places feature.

Google has tried to make checking-in as smooth as possible. Users can be offered a check-in option automatically where they arrive in a location if they choose. Or they can opt to be checked-in automatically at one of their regular haunts. And users can be checked-out automatically on their departure from a location.

As is typical with check-in services, Google’s Latitude offers rewards to enthusiastic users: Regular, VIP and Guru. The company is also running a trial in Austin, Texas, where keen users receive discounted offers with local restaurants, cafes and retailers.

On the privacy front, Google emphasises that users must actively opt-in to participate in the check-in service. And they can control how widely check-ins are shared. The new version of Latitude in the App Store requires iOS4 and above and is available for iPhone 3G S, iPhone4, iPad, iPod touch (3rd/4th generation) devices. Background location updating is only available for iPhone 3G S, iPhone4 and iPad 3G.

Finally, Google has also boosted the language skills of the Google Places app in the App Store. The local recommendation service is now available in 30 languages. The updated app also allows users to save previous recommendations.

Description

Google Latitude lets you stay in touch with your friends and family by making it easy to share where you are and see each other on a map. Share your location automatically or check in at specific places to share them with friends and gain status there.

With Latitude, you can:

* New! Check in and gain status at the places you go to share with friends.

* See your friends on a map – find out who’s nearby and meet up.

* Share your location continuously with whomever you choose – help friends and family stay in touch with you, even when you can’t take out your phone.

* Control your privacy – share only city-level location, hide your location, or turn off background updating at any time.

Latitude lets you share your location in the background, even when the app is closed or your device screen is locked. Background updating requires an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 with iOS 4 or above.

You can also enjoy Latitude from your computer at google.com/latitude to see where your friends are or turn on optional apps such as Google Location History for a personal history dashboard.

Brazil: Telefonica to invest US$14.6B

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Telefonica plans to invest BRL24.3 billion (US$14.6 billion) in the Brazilian telecoms market by the end of 2014, according to chairman César Alierta.

The proposed expenditure is a 52 percent increase over the BRL16 billion it spent in the previous four-year period (2007-2010). The investment covers fixed and TV as well as Telefonica’s mobile networks in the country, and includes modernising existing infrastructure as well as building out to new regions.

Spending on operating licences and possible acquisitions are also lumped into the projection. A statement issued by Alierta said Telefonica’s aim was to “cover almost 100 percent of Brazilian municipalities with telephone and broadband Internet, with fixed or mobile technologies”.

The statement followed a meeting between Alierta and Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff. Including the latest announcement, total investment by the company in Brazil will reach BRL82 billion. Telefonica has a high-profile brand in Brazil.

Vivo, the country’s leading mobile operator which Telefonica took over last year, will expand its 3G network to cover 2,832 towns and cities by the end of 2011. Vivo said last month it plans to invest BRL3.48 billion this year, a 40 percent increase over 2010.

Telefonica paid EUR7.5 billion to Portugal Telecom to take control of Vivo last summer. It is integrating the mobile operator with Telesp, its fixed-line operator.

The AirMouse a wearable mouse that fits you like a glove.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

The wireless mouse utilizes an optical laser, and can run for a week without recharging.

According to the company website, the clinically-tested product works by aligning itself with the ligaments of your hand and wrist. This lets you keep your hand in a neutral position, and transmits more of your vector force than would be possible with a regular mouse.

Not only does this make it easier on your hand, but it increases your mousing speed and accuracy as well.

The mouse is also designed to remain inactive until your hand is placed in a neutral, flat position, so you can easily go back and forth between typing and mousing. Other ergonomic designs have strayed from the AirMouse’s style of traditional flat, one-dimensional mousing, but Mark and Oren’s market research indicated that consumers tend to reject such products.

The AirMouse should be available for purchase within the next 6 to 12 months, at a price of $US129.

Is Motorola Building Web-Based OS ?

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Asked to comment, Motorola did not deny the existence of the project but re-affirmed its interest in Android. "Motorola Mobility is committed to Android as an operating system," a company spokesperson said via email.

Jonathan Goldberg, an analyst with Deutsche Bank in San Francisco, said that he too had heard Motorola was at work on its own operating system. "I know they're working on it," he said in a phone interview. "I think the company recognizes that they need to differentiate and they need options, just in case. Nobody wants to rely on a single supplier."

Goldberg said it's unclear how far along Motorola's operating system effort is and how serious the company is in seeking an Android alternative. "They don't want to give Wall Street and developers the impression that they're going back to the Motorola of old where they're working on 50 million operating systems at once," he said. "They want to be financially disciplined about this."

Over the past nine months, Motorola has been hiring engineering talent that would well-suited to create a new mobile operating system. Its team appears to include a significant number of ex-Apple and Adobe personnel, including Gilles Drieu, VP of software engineering at Motorola Mobility, Benoit Marchant, director of engineering at Motorola Mobility, and Sean Kranzberg, also a director of engineering at Motorola Mobility.

Drieu left Apple in March 2010, where he was the head of the company's rich media and applications group.

After a five month period without employment, he joined Motorola. His work with Web standards groups WhatWG and W3C and his Web-related patents suggest that he would be well-suited to lead an operating system development effort.

Drieu did not respond to an e-mailed request to comment or voicemail message.

Motorola's focus on a Web-centric operating system may reflect uncertainty about Android arising from Oracle's patent claims against Google. But building a new mobile OS around Web technologies is also eminently practical: There are a lot of Web developers already and there's a lot of support in terms of tools and frameworks. The fact that HP paid $1.2 billion for Palm and its webOS suggests there's some value in leveraging Web standards.

There may also be more immediate reasons for Motorola to look beyond Android. "Google is shooting itself in the foot," said the person familiar with Motorola's plans, citing what he sees as concerns about Android fragmentation, product differentiation, and issues related to Google's support for its partners.

LTE: Alcatel-Lucent to help China Mobile deploy world’s largest 4G TD-LTE

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced it has been selected by China Mobile to participate to the world’s largest 4G TD-LTE trial network deployment in China. This qualification follows successful completion of various interoperability tests which started from January 2010 as required by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information (MIIT) and China Mobile. Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, Alcatel-Lucent’s flagship company in China is one of the first suppliers to have successfully achieved this key milestone and will be deploying its end-to-end LTE solution for China Mobile’s large-scale 4G TD-LTE trial in the city of Shanghai.

Covering 6 major Chinese cities, namely Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Xiamen, and recently extended to Beijing, this large scale TD-LTE trial will help China Mobile to provide a wide range of high speed mobile broadband services to its subscribers, such as high definition video, 3D gaming, FTP transmission and high speed Internet. It will also enable new industries with LTE connectivity like automotive industry and multi-industry ecosystem development thanks to initiatives pioneered by Alcatel-Lucent through the ng Connect Program launched two years ago.

Rajeev Singh-Molares, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in Asia-Pacific said: “This is a major accomplishment for Alcatel-Lucent and clearly reinforces our leading position in China and our global leadership in LTE.

We are committed to provide China Mobile with the most advanced LTE solution for the world’s largest TD-LTE trial and to demonstrate the maturity and cost-effectiveness of our solution for TD-LTE which is emerging as the 4G standard for TDD spectrum globally. The successful interoperability tests with terminal suppliers further demonstrate our commitment to create an open TD-LTE ecosystem that will participate in the broader global LTE value chain.”

The tests were conducted in both 2.3GHz and 2.6GHz frequency bands for indoor and outdoor deployments and relied on Alcatel-Lucent’s industry-leading LTE expertise to provide an end-to-end integrated solution including LTE base stations (eNodeBs), the Evolved Packet Core (EPC). Alcatel-Lucent’s solution successfully passed interoperability tests with two major terminal suppliers.

Alcatel-Lucent is a key partner of China Mobile on TD-LTE and next generation wireless networks initiatives and evolution programs. During the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Alcatel-Lucent supported China Mobile in the first large-scale TD-LTE trial network deployment delivering advanced mobile services including ultra high speed Internet access and High Definition TV (HDTV).

Most recently, at Mobile World Congress, Alcatel-Lucent and China Mobile demonstrated with Audi, a variety of in-vehicle high-value applications that worked seamlessly on a converged Time Division Duplex (TDD) and Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) network ensuring seamless global coverageand the ability to benefit from a common LTE ecosystem across both modes.

Alcatel-Lucent and China Mobile are partnering to develop next-generation radio access network based on Alcatel-Lucent’s lightRadio, a groundbreaking innovation to prepare wireless networks to handle the explosive growth in demand for wireless broadband services while making the networks more eco friendly.

Having been selected so far by twelve customers for commercial deployments -- including two of the world’s largest service providers -- and being involved in over 60 trials worldwide –- including thirteen LTE TDD trials in seven countries -- Alcatel-Lucent has established a strong leadership position in LTE.

Microsoft sues Barnes & Noble, Foxconn and Inventec over patent infringement.Cause Androids.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Microsoft today took legal action against Barnes & Noble, Inc. as well as its device manufacturer partners, Foxconn International Holdings Ltd. and Inventec Corporation. At issue is alleged patent infringement by the Barnes and Noble e-reader that is powered by Google's Android operating system.

"The Android platform infringes a number of Microsoft’s patents, and companies manufacturing and shipping Android devices must respect our intellectual property rights," Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft said in a statement.
Google has a different opinion.

"Sweeping software patent claims like Microsoft's threaten innovation," Google said in a statement sent to InternetNews.com. "While we are not a party to this lawsuit, we stand behind the Android platform and the partners who have helped us to develop it."

Gutierrez noted that Microsoft has licensed its intellectual property to other vendors in the Android space including HTC. He added that Microsoft has been attempting to engage Barnes and Noble and its device manufacturers in a licensing agreement for the past year.

Google's Android operating system leverages multiple components from the open source ecosystem as well as components from Oracle's Java. Microsoft has long argued that open source software infringes on its intellectual property. On the Linux front, Microsoft has a multi-year patent covenant with Linux vendor Novell already.

Oracle is currently involved in its own lawsuit against Google over the use of Java in Android.

Microsoft has specifically identified at least five patents that Android may be infringing upon. Among the patents at issue is, U.S. Patent No. 5,889,522 which is titled, "System provided child window controls." The patent describes a method to enable the opening of a new, tabbed control window.

U.S. Patent No. 5,778,372, describes a method for, "Remote retrieval and display management of electronic documents." U.S. Patent No. 6,339,780 is about providing the status of download and is titled, "Loading status in a hypermedia browser having a limited available display area."

The ability to select text is the subject of U.S. Patent No. 6,891,551 titled, "Selection handles in editing electronic documents."

One other Microsoft patent that may be at issue is U.S. Patent No. 6,957,233 which describes a method and apparatus for capturing annotations for a non-modifiable document.

Barnes & Noble isn't the first vendor that Microsoft had taken legal action against due to alleged Android infringement issues. In 2010, Microsoft filed suit against Motorola alleging infringement of nine Microsoft patents.

Nokia last night confirmed reports it is to launch a new Symbian device in the US via an exclusive deal with T-Mobile, a move designed to strengthen its limited presence in the North American market and build on its recent promise to ship 150 million more Symbian devices.

Dubbed the Nokia Astound, the new device appears to be a tweaked C7, featuring the same 3.5-inch AMOLED display, 8 megapixel camera, and 720p HD video capture as the original announced last year.

The only obvious differences are the T-Mobile branding along the bottom chin and support for the updated Symbian^3.1, which has features including portrait QWERTY input and a refreshed browser.

T-Mobile will be offering Wi-Fi calling as well as unrestricted video calling over Qik thanks to the front-facing camera. Nokia has called it “an affordable smartphone,” promising availability beginning 6 April for US$79.99 after a US$50 mail-in rebate on contract.

Nokia’s move comes as it recently promised to commit to “the long-tail of Symbian as long as it gives us profitable margin.” The world’s largest handset vendor has already pledged to move to Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS as its “primary smartphone platform,” but that strategy will take until 2013 to come to full fruition and in the meantime Nokia has said it intends to sell 150 million more Symbian phones during the transition phase.

Nokia has an installed user base of around 200 million Symbian phones worldwide. The company plans to update Symbian's user interface this year. Meanwhile the launch of the Astound will aim to boost its credentials in the US market.

UK: 4G spectrum auctions in 2012

UK regulator Ofcom announced plans to auction-off spectrum suitable for LTE early next year. It said that the 250MHz of new spectrum on offer – in the 800MHz (digital dividend) and 2.6GHz frequency bands – is equivalent to three quarters of the mobile spectrum in use in the UK today, and 80 percent more than the UK 3G auctions that took place in 2000.

“The combination of low and high frequency spectrum available... creates the potential for next generation mobile broadband services to be widely available across the UK, while at the same time having the capacity to cope with significant demand, even in urban centres,” the regulator said in a statement.

However, Ofcom faces problems due to the uneven way spectrum has been allocated in the past. For example, market-leader Everything Everywhere (formed by the merger of Orange UK and T-Mobile UK) holds no valuable spectrum under 1GHz, while rivals O2 and Vodafone are currently re-farming existing 900MHz for mobile broadband use. The UK’s 3G auctions a decade ago raised a colossal £22.5 billion for the government but the 4G frequencies are expected to raise just a fraction of that.

Ofcom has put a number of safeguards in place to ensure that none of the UK’s four national operators use the auctions to gain an unfair competitive advantage.

“The least restrictive way to ensure at least four national competitors is through the use of spectrum floors in the auction,” it said. “This involves disregarding any auction outcomes in which four companies do not win the minimum amount of spectrum necessary to provide higher quality data services.

This can involve different combinations of spectrum, each of which could be sufficient to ensure a credible competitor.” These conditions are also seen as a way of ensuring the survival of 3 UK, the country’s smallest operator, which would otherwise struggle to compete with its much larger rivals in the auction process.
